TVO explores the future of education at the WGSI Equinox Summit: Learning 2030
- TVO will also be at the BrainSTEM: Your Future is Now Festival, a concurrent event at Perimeter Institute
TORONTO, Sept. 16, 2013 /CNW/ - From September 30 to October 4, TVO presents five, on-location programs of its flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin at the Waterloo Global Science Initiative's Equinox Summit: Learning 2030. The Equinox Summit, which takes place at Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, is the final stop on the TVO on the Road: Learning 2030 tour and is the culmination of TVO's year-long, multiplatform Learning 2030 series exploring the future of education.
The Equinox Summit brings together a multinational, multidisciplinary and multigenerational group of experts to explore best practices and promising initiatives in education. From September 30 to October 4 at 8 and 11 pm on TVO, and streamed live at tvo.org/learning2030, The Agenda will tap into this expertise for an in-depth analysis of how education and learning is being transformed for 21st century learners.
During the week, The Agenda looks at why the current education system may not be suited for all students, the growing appeal of self-directed learning and home-schooling, the importance of scientific literacy, and how technology will shape the future curriculum. The week concludes with a debate on the Summit's final communiqué which provides recommendations on how best to build a learning environment that fosters critical thinking, problem solving and innovation. Live chats will accompany each broadcast of The Agenda at TVO's Learning 2030 website beginning at 8 pm. To register for free tickets to be part of The Agenda audience visit tvo.org/learning2030.
"The field of education is at a turning point with advances in science and leaps in digital technology transforming how we learn and how teachers teach," says Lisa de Wilde, TVO's Chief Executive Officer. "TVO has provided unparalleled media resources through our Learning 2030 series over the past year in order to help Ontarians better understand the impact of these changes on learners of all ages. I'm delighted TVO can be part of Equinox Summit: Learning 2030 to continue engaging citizens in this important discussion."
TVO is the presenting media partner of the WGSI's Equinox Summit: Learning 2030 and of the Perimeter Institute's concurrent event BrainSTEM: Your Future Is Now Festival. The events are part of TVO's five-year partnership with Perimeter Institute to advance scientific literacy and engage wider audiences in vital discussions.
While the Equinox Summit looks toward the future in the field of education, BrainSTEM will showcase the latest scientific and technological innovations through a series of hands-on exhibits, lectures, events and tours. As a leader in using digital media to advance scientific literacy in Ontario, TVO will live stream public lectures by Lucy Hawking, daughter of physicist Stephen Hawking, mathematician James Grime, and Perimeter Institute founding member Raymond Laflamme. The lectures will be available at tvo.org/learning2030.
TVO will also demonstrate its first motion control technology-based game, Caterpillar Count, a free TVOKids math activity for preschoolers available now on the Leap Motion™ platform. Originally a mouse-controlled activity at tvokids.com, the new Caterpillar Count allows kids to move their fingers in the air to help a caterpillar grow while learning to count in sequence. Kids can also ask a science question at the TVOKids "I Wonder Why?" video kiosk. Selected entries will be answered by Perimeter Institute scientists and will be available online at tvokids.com later this fall.
