TORONTO, May 10 /CNW/ - What insights does the world's most famous living scientist have to share with Canadians? How can music inspire, transform and heal? And is pride a movement, a lifestyle, or just a state of mind? TVO explores these questions and more in June.
Sunday June 20 at 8 pm, TVO airs a special presentation by world-renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, live from the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo. TVO is the official broadcaster of the presentation, which will be seen across the country. Professor Hawking will share numerous insights on space, time and matter - plus his views on how science might shape our world.
Also in June, TVO's Masterworks presents a month-long celebration of the sounds of strings with documentaries that feature talented artists from Canada and around the world. The centerpiece is the world premiere of Silence at the Heart of Things, Thursday June 17 2010 at 10 pm. The film charts the remarkable life and career of Canadian fiddler extraordinaire, Oliver Schroer, who died at the age of 52 after a year-long battle with leukemia.
Other Masterworks titles include encore presentations of 4 (Thursday June 3 at 10 pm), a journey through the homelands of four violinists; Billy Bang's Redemption Song (Thursday June 10 at 10 pm), a look at how music helped the American violinist and Vietnam War veteran come to terms with his past; and Soweto Strings (Thursday June 24 at 10 pm), profiling the inspiring work of a British viola player who transformed the lives of kids in a small African town through a special music school.
And in recognition of Pride Week celebrations in Toronto and around the world, TVO presents a lineup of documentaries and films exploring diversity in all its colours, including Rob Epstein's The Times of Harvey Milk (Wednesday June 30 at 10 pm), and a gender bender-themed evening on Saturday Night at the Movies (June 26 starting at 8 pm).
