TORONTO, April 12 /CNW/ - How does the mother-daughter bond change when everyday is "mother's day"? What are the personal sacrifices that an amateur hockey team must make in order to advance to the finals? How has photography shaped contemporary society? What do Marshall McLuhan and Tom Wolfe have in common? These are just a few of the many thought-provoking questions raised in TVO's May lineup of current affairs, documentaries, dramas and more.
Wednesday May 5 on The View From Here, TVO presents the world premiere of the documentary Mom's Home from Canadian filmmaker Maureen Judge (Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship; In My Parents' Basement). The final instalment in her vérité trilogy exploring parent/adult-child relationships, Mom's Home is an insightful look at the myriad social adjustments and changing expectations aging mothers and their grown daughters must navigate when they move in together. Watch also for the world premiere of Blood, Sweat and Beers on Wednesday May 12 at 10 pm, a no-holds-barred look at the Bentley Generals, a beloved amateur hockey team from Alberta and their passionate quest to bring home their first national Allan Cup championship.
Beginning Sunday May 2 and running throughout the month TVO celebrates the artistry, the craft and the power of photography in eye-opening documentaries that profile the lives and work of some of the world's most influential photographers and examine the ways in which their images have reflected and shaped their time and our society.
TVO's Photography Month is presented by Henry's and airs in conjunction with the Scotiabank CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival. This year CONTACT examines the role that photography plays in contemporary society and honours Marshall McLuhan on the 30th anniversary of his death.
To mark the special anniversary, TVO will air two back-to-back specials: Marshall McLuhan in conversation with author Tom Wolfe (1970) followed by a Marshall McLuhan interview with TVO host Mike McManus (1977) on Friday May 7 starting at 10 pm.
A new photo contest will also run in conjunction with the Scotiabank CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival. For details go to tvo.org/photomonth.
