TVO Receives $2.4 Million Bequest Gift from the Estate of Mr. Donald Pounder
TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2014 /CNW/ - TVO is grateful to have received a donation in the amount of $2.4 million through the generosity of an avid TVO fan, Mr. Donald Pounder. Mr. Pounder passed away May 1, 2013. Mr. Pounder's donation is the single largest gift ever made by an individual to TVO.
"TVO is sincerely thankful to Mr. Pounder," says Lisa de Wilde, TVO's Chief Executive Officer. "This gift is truly transformative. People like Mr. Pounder make gifts like this because they trust the organization that they are leaving the gift to. His legacy lives on and his generosity allows TVO to grow its role as deliverer and innovator of digital educational content that ignites the potential for learning among Ontarians."
Mr. Pounder was a passionate TVO viewer of The Agenda with Steve Paikin – he enjoyed telling people that The Agenda and Steve were like family to him, especially in the later stages of his life. In keeping with Mr. Pounder's wishes, 25 per cent of his bequest will be directed towards The Agenda -programming that he cared so deeply about.
As the technological extension of the public education system, TVO will put the remainder of Mr. Pounder's donation towards the development of digital learning programs and the production of innovative educational content that ignites the potential that lies within everyone through learning.
Mr. Pounder was a graduate of University of Toronto, and held a Masters Degree in Mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He applied his academic training to a varied career that took him to Avro Canada and IBM and a number of other organizations. His interests included gliding and music history and he was an active member of the Canadian Amateur Musicians of Canada.
Mr. Pounder's donation was announced yesterday evening at TVO's Annual Tribute Gala in Toronto which this year honoured former TVO Chairs and Chief Executive Officers Isabel Bassett and Peter Herrndorf for their achievements and contributions to TVO.
