TVO searches for Ontario's next great filmmaker: make a "doc that matters" for TVO's third annual Doc Studio Contest
TORONTO, Oct. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - TVO launches its third annual TVO Doc Studio Contest today, providing an opportunity for film buffs, budding directors and accomplished filmmakers alike to examine societal issues in a film of five minutes or less. Under the theme Docs That Matter, TVO is calling on filmmakers to give voice to an issue they are passionate about, be it social justice, global security or personal freedom. Submissions will be accepted via the Doc Studio site or by mail until Friday March 28, 2014. The winner will see his/her documentary aired on TVO, receive a pass to the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, and spend a day on the job with contest judge and Doc Studio featured filmmaker, Peter Raymont.
"Documentaries that move me reflect the social, economic and political issues facing society," says award-winning Canadian filmmaker Peter Raymont. Peter's formative years were coloured by the events of his time: the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement and Quebec's Révolution Tranquille. "We hope participants address issues in the spirit of making a difference. There is a lot that needs to be challenged today and passionate films that need to be made. But films with a cause must also be entertaining, featuring compelling individuals in the midst of change."
A panel of judges including Peter Raymont will evaluate eligible entries and select the top five films. Entries will be judged on their ability to demonstrate why the subject matter of the film is meaningful to the filmmaker; tell a good story; and illicit an emotional response from the viewer.
TVO will showcase the five finalists on the Doc Studio site from April 3 to 17, when Ontarians will be invited to vote for their favourite film. The winner will be announced in late April. Complete entry details can be found on the Doc Studio contest page.
TVO's Doc Studio is an online showcase for documentary filmmakers and their work, and a learning community supporting point-of-view filmmaking. A leader in Canadian point-of-view documentaries, TVO devotes more than half of its primetime schedule to documentaries.
