TVOKids helps children get ready for school with new math, science and literacy content for every screen
TORONTO, Aug. 20, 2013 /CNW/ - With September just around the corner, TVOKids takes the learning experience to every screen with the launch of new multiplatform content that will help kids develop the literacy skills they need for success in school and inspire a love of learning through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. Beginning August 26, TVOKids will roll out Back to School Week programming on air, educational games online at tvokids.com, interactive ebooks, apps, and valuable resources for parents at TVOParents.com and TVOKids Homework Zone.
TVOKids' Back to School Week programming includes the premieres of two new science series. Zerby Derby rolls into TVOKids' preschool block, Gisele's Big Backyard, and features inquisitive remote-controlled car characters (Monday to Friday at 6 am and 3:30 pm). Zerby Derby is based on STEM education and kids can also test their problem-solving skills with Zerby Derby ebooks and games available at tvokids.com. And Dino Dan: Trek's Adventures, starring Dan's younger brother Trek, stomps into TVOKids' afterschool block, The Space, (Tuesday to Wednesday at 5 pm). Kids can visit tvokids.com to learn more about dinosaurs by playing Dino Dan online games.
And as TVO celebrates Gisèle Corinthios' 15th year as host of Gisèle's Big Backyard, TVO's award-winning programming block for kids aged two to five introduces two new TVO-produced STEM interstitial series. Let's Build It shows kids how to measure and select different materials and tools for building, and Sandy Math teaches kids about numbers, shapes and counting. TVOKids is also inspiring a love of reading with new segments of Gisèle's Big Backyard Book Club, which teach kids to identify different aspects of a story including characters, plot and genres.
On The Space, TVOKids' live and interactive after-school on-air programming block, new science interstitial series ISS Space News explores different aspects of the International Space Station and uses archival footage from space. And the digital literacy series, The Media Lab, premieres and teaches children about digital media, its tools and how to use them safely equipping children with the skills needed for success in the digital age. Kids can then head over to tvokids.com to play The Media Lab: Web Wiz quiz and test their digital literacy knowledge. New episodes of TVO's literacy series The Reading Rangers are complemented by the launch of its two ebooks, Rangerpalooza on August 19, and The Mayor's Muffins on September 13.
Also returning this fall are the animated preschool series Jack (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 10 am), live-action science series Finding Stuff Out (Mondays and Fridays at 5:30 pm, Saturdays at 9:30 am, and Sundays at 3:30 pm), the ever-popular Wild Kratts (Monday to Friday at 7:30 am and 6 pm and Saturdays at 10 am and Sundays at 3:30 pm), and live-action math program Prime Radicals (Sundays at 12:30 pm).
TVO-produced children's programs, web activities and mobile apps are built in collaboration with TVO's on-staff educator and classroom-tested to ensure specific educational objectives from the Ontario school curriculum are met.

On September 3, TVOKids Homework Zone launches Math Master, a game geared towards children in grades 3-6 that helps them practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. The game is customizable based on grade level and number range and kids can email or print out their results to show they've been practicing.
