TVOKids teaches children ABC and 123 fundamentals this fall
TORONTO, Sept. 6, 2012 /CNW/ - With the school year underway this week, TVOKids is playing an increasingly important role in Ontario children's education with multiplatform content to improve math, science and literacy skills. Considered the most trusted and most educational media brand for children in Canada, TVOKids has two dedicated programming blocks: Gisèle's Big Backyard and The Space which are designed to help children build the skills necessary to be successful in school. For those looking for extra help with math, science and literacy, the TVOKids Homework Zone is a go-to resource providing curriculum-based TVOKids shows, teacher videos, and online educational games.
Aimed at children aged two to five, Gisèle's Big Backyard is based on the Ontario kindergarten curriculum, and airs weekdays from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm and online at tvokids.com. Gisèle's Big Backyard debuts segments of This and That Shop's financial literacy series Carney the Coin Counting Cat and premieres new literacy segments The Letter Tree and Rhyme Time. Also this fall, Gisèle reads three new books in her Book Club segments that teach kids the importance of reading.
TVOKids' live and interactive after school on-air programming block, The Space, provides content that supports the Ontario school curriculum and airs weekdays from 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm, weekends from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm and online at tvokids.com. Premiering this fall are new literacy segments of The Reading Rangers starring Rangers Kara, Dalmar and Drew. Saddling up to tackle reading, these town rangers teach kids what literacy is all about. Two new animated science programs, Green Squad and Mouk, both explore different places around the globe to teach kids about environmental science and encourage civic engagement.
Returning series for pre-school viewers include favourites Sid the Science Kid (Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00 am), and Jack (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 5:00 pm). Starting October 15, popular programs Wild Kratts (Saturdays at 3:00 pm and Sundays at 10:30 am), and Making Stuff (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 5:30 pm) also return for viewers six to eleven years of age.

Gisèle's Big Backyard
This and That Shop
Carney the Coin Counting Cat returns on air and online to the This and That Shop to show children how to count money while teaching them the value of each coin and exploring financial literacy for early learners. This and That Shop will also explore words and sounds, with Jay the blue jay who teaches kids how to use words in sentences.
Gisèle's Book Club
Gisèle's Book Club returns with three new books: The Party, Wanda and the Wild Hair and Picture a Tree. On-air, Gisèle reads sections from one book each month, and on tvokids.com, children are encouraged to give their impressions of the books.
Rhyme Time
An all new literary series, Rhyme Time premieres on September 10 and features Gisèle's Big Backyard''s favourite blue jay, Jay. On assignment for Big Backyard News, Jay goes into school classrooms to search out rhyming words. With the help of real students, Jay's search for these words leads to great discoveries while kids learn sounds, rhymes and language structure along the way. Episodes are also available on tvokids.com.
The Letter Tree
An all new series in Gisèle's Big Backyard this fall, The Letter Tree begins on November 5 and teaches children letter recognition and phonetics. To start the journey, Gisèle shakes the letter tree to reveal the letter of the day, and the magic begins as she explores the alphabet with young learners. Episodes are also available on tvokids.com.
The Space
Reading Rangers
The Reading Rangers return to TVOKids this fall with new segments beginning September 24. The Rangers saddle up to spread their love of reading and explore rhyming words, grammar and verbs to teach children why language is so important in their lives. The wild west experience continues at tvokids.com with the online Reading Rangers Book Club and a new educational crossword game Clip Clop Puzzler.
Lady Vocab
Also in October, The Space's intergalactic diva Lady Vocab returns with eight new songs and music videos on-air and online at tvokids.com. Bringing her favourite words to life through voice and song, Lady Vocab rocks the house, teaching children the meaning of words and how to use them in a sentence.
TVOKids Co-Productions
Five
Five takes viewers around the world and highlights five different things that make each location unique, from families to forests, animals to arts, schools to sports, transportation to tribes and everything in between. With each segment narrated by a different child, Five is suited to early learners and airs at 6:30 am on weekdays, 2:30 pm on Saturdays and online at tvokids.com.
Green Squad
Green Squad features three travelling siblings who visit countries around the world to protect endangered species. Created for children aged six to eleven, Green Squad encourages children to get excited about environmental science, explore the world and be part of the solution. Green Squad airs Thursdays at 6:30 pm.
Mouk
From Tokyo to New York and Australia to Madagascar, Mouk explores the amazing people, landscapes, and customs from all corners of the globe. Two friends, Mouk and Chavapa teach children to look beyond cultural and environmental differences and see that friends can be made everywhere. Mouk is geared towards children aged six to eleven and airs at 9:30 am on Sundays and online at tvokids.com.
