TVOParents.com and SickKids team up to support brain development in children
TORONTO, Sept. 10, 2012 /CNW/ - TVOParents.com and Infant Mental Health Promotion (IMHP) at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto are teaming up to provide content that teaches parents how to support early mental health and brain development in children. As the go-to education resource for Ontario parents seeking to help their kids succeed in school and in life, TVOParents.com provides IMHP with a trusted forum to get these crucial resources into parents' hands while encouraging engaged parenting. TVOParents.com's homepage features weekly "SickKids Tips" that help parents recognize and respond to the stress their kids may experience in a way that supports healthy brain development.
In the first three years of life, the brain matures at a faster rate than any other period and stressful situations can cause high levels of cortisol leading to a loss of brain cells. A parent's response to stressful situations can make or break a child's healthy brain development. "SickKids Tips" from IMHP will explore the relationship between child anxiety and its effects on the brain while providing parents with the resources to respond effectively. In this collaboration, TVOParents.com and IMHP at SickKids will examine themes including: back-to-school, bullying, family stress, and family literacy.
"What happens in the early years sets a child's developmental trajectory for life," said Chaya Kulkarni, Director of IMHP at SickKids. "Parents are the most important people in a child's life, so equipping them with helpful tips on mental health and brain development is essential. The partnership with TVOParents.com will help us to reach these parents and promote children's mental health awareness."
"This new collaboration with Infant Mental Health Promotion at SickKids, will provide Ontario parents with more of the unique educational content they've come to expect from TVOParents.com," said Lisa de Wilde Chief Executive Officer of TVO. "By combining TVOParents.com's digital media toolkit with SickKids' medical expertise, we're helping equip parents with resources they need to set their children on the path to success in school and in life."
