TVO's creative content lauded with eight 2017 Canadian Screen Awards -- TVOKids and documentaries
TORONTO, March 10, 2017 /CNW/ - TVO's high-calibre current affairs and children's educational content was honoured earlier this week by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television with eight 2017 Canadian Screen Awards (CSA). The CSAs recognize excellence in film, television, and digital media. TVO was a winner of five awards for TVOKids and three awards for its groundbreaking documentaries.
"These awards are a testament to the power of TVO's impact on engaging Ontarians of all ages," says Lisa de Wilde, Chief Executive Officer. "TVO is proud to partner with Canadian independent producers to create award-winning content that informs and inspires. I salute all partners and TVO staff who were recognized by the Academy with both awards and nominations."
TVOKids took home a total of five awards, including: Best Pre-School Program or Series for PAW Patrol, produced in association with Spin Master; Best Children's or Youth Fiction Program or Series for Odd Squad, produced in association with Sinking Ship Entertainment; and Best Children's or Youth Non-Fiction Program or Series for Science Max: Experiments at Large, produced in association with Breakthrough Entertainment. Science Max Interactive also won Best Cross-Platform Project - Children's and Youth.
"By working with producers like Breakthrough Entertainment and educational partners like the Ontario Science Centre, TVO is able to deliver programs and digital platforms like Science Max that reinforce the Ontario curriculum and set children up for success in school and in life," says de Wilde.
TVO's documentaries were also honoured with three awards, including Best Documentary Program for the TVO-commissioned My Millennial Life. Produced by Makin' Movies Inc. and Rock Yenta Productions, the documentary follows a group of 20-somethings who want to achieve their dreams but are met with the realities of finding a job, paying their bills and becoming financially independent.
"TVO's groundbreaking documentaries provide intelligent, in-depth explorations of issues that affect us," says de Wilde. "I am very proud of the new voices and fresh perspectives of My Millennial Life." TVO documentaries Painted Land: In Search of the Group of Seven and The Woman Who Joined The Taliban also received Canadian Screen Awards.
