The Government of Canada invites communities to take part in the celebrations taking place from coast to coast to coast
OTTAWA, May 19, 2017 /CNW/ - The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today invited all Canadians to take part in the many major celebrations taking place for Canada 150.
The period leading up to Canada Day will be particularly exciting this year, as Canadians will have the opportunity to take part in 12 days of celebrations from June 21 to July 2. These festivities, taking place across the country, will mark National Aboriginal Day, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Fête nationale du Québec et de la Francophonie canadienne, Canadian Multiculturalism Day and Canada Day in a spectacular fashion. More than 1,500 activities happening across Canada, as well as 36 major celebrations in 19 urban centres, will put communities at the heart of Canada 150 celebrations.
During this time of celebration, Canadians will be invited to memorable festivities and major shows that will highlight the talent of our Canadian artists. The Government of Canada will also celebrate Canada Day in Canada's Capital Region in a spectacular fashion, with festivities spanning three days (Friday, June 30 in the evening, Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2). The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) will be hosting citizenship reaffirmation ceremonies on July 1 in 18 cities across the country to give Canadians an opportunity to re-express their commitment to their country.
The 12 days of celebrations around Canada Day will inspire pride and enthusiasm among Canadians of all backgrounds. This exciting period will also be an opportunity to highlight what makes communities all across the country so unique, diverse and vibrant. Minister Joly encourages Canadians not to miss the activities planned for this outstanding year, from coast to coast to coast.

Celebrate Canada is a period of four celebrations from June 21 to July 2. In honour of Canada 150, this year's edition will be the most spectacular in Canadian history. Twelve days of festivities will be held for the first time from coast to coast to coast. They will begin on June 21 and conclude with a full weekend of activities in Canada's Capital Region.
Canada's Capital Region will feature three-day festivities (Friday, June 30 in the evening, Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2). Special programs in English and French will also be produced for television, radio and the Web in collaboration with CBC/Radio-Canada, official media partner.
June 21 is National Aboriginal Day: a celebration of Indigenous culture and heritage. This date was chosen because it corresponds to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and because many Indigenous groups celebrate their culture and heritage at this time of year.
June 24, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Fête nationale du Québec et de la Francophonie canadienne, marries the ancient rites surrounding the summer solstice—a period of light and hope—and the traditional celebration of the day of the patron saint of French Canadians.
June 27 was designated Canadian Multiculturalism Day on November 13, 2002. This day is an opportunity to appreciate the contributions of the various multicultural groups and communities to Canadian society.
On July 1, Canada Day, Canadians at home and abroad show their pride in their country's history, culture and accomplishments.
This year, 19 urban centres across the country will celebrate Canada Day in a spectacular fashion: St. John's, Charlottetown, Halifax, Fredericton, Moncton, Québec City, Montréal, Ottawa–Gatineau, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Iqaluit.
The 2017 Celebrate Canada period will highlight the evolution of our country from its Indigenous origins to the presence of the French and the birth of our rich Francophone heritage, and through the more recent waves of immigration that led to the development of a diverse and inclusive society.
The celebrations will also focus on Canada 150's four major themes: diversity and inclusion, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, youth and the environment.
