OTTAWA, Dec. 27, 2017 /CNW/ - Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Ottawa Regional Detachment recently seized bottles of suspected liquid cocaine and arrested two people upon their return to MacDonald-Cartier International Airport in Ottawa.
On December 7, 2017, two travellers arrived on a flight from the Dominican Republic and were referred for a secondary examination. During the search, border services officers found 10 one-litre bottles of rum. A test of the liquid in the bottles determined that they contained suspected liquid cocaine. A detector dog also gave a positive indication for suspected cocaine. The two, both from Ottawa, were arrested and turned over to the RCMP.
Mercedez Greig, 22 years old and Gersi Mulollari, 23 years old are charged with:
- Importation of cocaine contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act (CDSA)
- Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, contrary to the CDSA
Both suspects were released from custody and will appear in court on January 2, 2018 at the Ottawa Court House, 161 Elgin Street.
"Crime has no borders. We live in an increasingly global and interconnected world, and this investigation shows how the RCMP in partnership with the CBSA, aim at stopping crime before it reaches Canadian borders," said Supt. Ivan Verdurmen, RCMP North East District Commander.
"This is a great job by border services officers at Ottawa Airport. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the RCMP to prevent illegal activity at the border and to keep our communities safe from illicit drugs," said Tammy Kendrew, Chief of Operations, MacDonald-Cartier International Airport, Canada Border Services Agency.
Anyone with information regarding criminal activity is encouraged to contact their local police, the RCMP at 1-800-387-0020 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. If you have information about suspicious cross-border activity, please contact the CBSA Border Watch Toll free Line at 1-888-502-9060.
