Two Canadian hair care brands bring education to children in Africa
VANCOUVER, BC and RED DEER, AB, April 16, 2013 /CNW/ - Education empowers everyone, but for girls growing up in extreme poverty, education can literally change their lives. That's why Canadian hair care brands AG Hair and Chatters Canada Limited have teamed up to build a school in Northern Uganda.
"The key to ultimately ending poverty and injustice for women in Africa is through education, and particularly education for girls," says Lotte Davis, CEO and Co-Founder of AG Hair. Through proceeds from every bottle sold, AG has been building schools for girls in Africa since 2008 and has raised over $700,000 under its philanthropic umbrella, the Women Leading Change Foundation.
The next school that will be rebuilt is Patongo School, in Northern Uganda. For 22 years, a warlord named Joseph Kony waged a war in this region, abducting boys and girls to join his band of rebels. An entire generation grew up without access to education.
When Chatters Canada, AG's largest Canadian customer, heard about this project, the salon chain was eager to get involved. "For nearly 25 years, Chatters has been giving back to communities," says Jason Volk, CEO of Chatters Canada Limited. "We believe in shared success and recognizing important opportunities to help make a difference."
Through the generous contributions of its franchisees, Chatters has committed a minimum of $100,000 to the joint effort. On May 11, 2013, Chatters' salons will host a nationwide cut-a-thon event called A Beautiful Cause, where the cost of all haircuts will be donated to Women Leading Change. On this day, Chatters is asking for a minimum $12 donation with each hair cut to support this cause.
Money raised from the AG Hair and Chatters Canada 2013 partnership will build and furnish two classroom buildings and construct eight staff houses at Patongo, just a few of the changes planned for the school. To help build a school for children in Patongo, have your hair cut at a Chatters salon on May 11. For locations, visit chatters.ca.
You can also help by purchasing a limited edition AG Hair Women Leading Change shampoo and conditioner box during May and June in salons across North America. Visit womenleadingchange.ca for more information.
