TORONTO, March 26, 2013 /CNW/ - In a heated second episode of season three of Top Chef Canada on Food Network Canada Monday night, the remaining 15 chefs battled wind, rain, wasps - and each other - during a paired scavenger hunt challenge at Riverdale Farm. At the end of the double elimination challenge, two Toronto chefs were sent home including chef Ruth Eddolls (originally from Acton, ON), whose mushroom broth fell flat, and chef Dennis Tay (originally from Windsor, ON) for his overly tarragon-flavoured corn succotash. The winning team, Newfoundland chef Chris Chafe and Vancouver chef Matthew Stowe, delivered "a truly Canadian plate" with their pan roasted quail breast, as head judge Mark McEwan put it. The dish was so good it had guest judge Robert Irvine Restaurant: Impossible) wanting to lick his plate.
Last night's Quickfire Challenge tested the chefs' survival skills with guest judge Survivorman's Les Stroud. Each chef had to make a dish using at least two ingredients from an MRE (Meal Ready to Eat). Toronto chef Jonathan Goodyear impressed Les by skillfully using his MRE ingredients to create a cracker crusted wild sockeye salmon with cucumber slaw and iced tea, earning him both Elimination Challenge immunity and a seat at the judges' table.
In a sneak peek of next week's episode on Mon., April 1 at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT, the chefs make the ultimate vegan dish for guest judge George Stroumboulopoulos (George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight) in the Quickfire Challenge. Later, internationally-acclaimed chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud serves as guest judge in the Elimination Challenge. This time, the chefs break into groups and create dishes for different food service categories - dining room, café and bar - at The SoHo Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto.
