U-Haul Giving Facelift to Abandoned Windsor Manufacturing Plant
WINDSOR, Ontario, Nov. 13, 2015 /CNW/ -- U-Haul Company's recent acquisition and adaptive reuse of an abandoned manufacturing plant has residents of Windsor, including Mayor Drew Dilkens, excited for the reduction in blight and the anticipation of a new full-service store for the do-it-yourself mover.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of Forest Glade at 9082 Tecumseh Road E. is now open and offering truck and trailer rentals as well as moving supplies. U-Haul closed on the property Sept. 30.
"This investment is great news for the City," Dilkens said. "U-Haul is a household name and well respected in the industry, and I want to thank them for their confidence in the Windsor market. In addition, the clean-up and visual improvements to the site is welcomed news to this area of the city."
After sitting empty for nearly 20 years, the 11-acre property is getting an overhaul inside and out. The 128,240-square-foot building will be renovated within the next year to include 1,000 indoor storage units, drive-up storage units, a U-Box portable moving and self-storage container warehouse, a hitch bay and much more.
"This has been an eyesore for years, but when we are finished it will be amazing," U-Haul Company of Western Ontario president David Anstett said. "We are rebuilding a spot where so many people worked in the past, and I am proud of this growing tie with the community."
The city of Windsor purchased what was previously known as the Wickes property in 2009 with the objective to facilitate its cleanup and redevelopment. The city is using grant money to aid U-Haul in the cleanup efforts.
The acquisition of U-Haul Moving & Storage of Forest Glade was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
