Creating 2,400 Jobs In the Region
TORONTO, July 23, 2015 /CNW/ - Uber Canada is introducing its highly popular ridesharing product, uberX, to several communities in Southwestern Ontario today with rides available at 2:00 PM.
London, Waterloo Region, Hamilton and Guelph join the ever-growing list of more than 25 communities in Canada that offer ridesharing, including Ottawa, Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto. From today until Sunday, riders can enjoy free Uber rides to try the new service. "Uber's launch today brings ridesharing to over 1.4 million Ontarians, who now have access to a smarter and more affordable way to get around town. By opening these markets, Uber stands to create more than 2,400 driver partner jobs in the region over the next year," said Ian Black, General Manager of Uber Canada.
By connecting riders and drivers through the use of a smartphone application, Uber is revolutionizing the way people access their cities around the world. At prices up to twenty-five percent less than a taxi, uberX is the company's low-cost ridesharing option, offering reliable on-demand transportation at the touch of a button. UberX partners with licensed drivers who use their own personal vehicles to give their neighbours a ride.
"Riders and drivers are quick to realize the benefits of Uber: more jobs, more urban mobility and safer streets where ridesharing becomes the easy choice over impaired driving," added Black.
All uberX drivers must pass background checks that include RCMP and local records, surpassing municipal taxi and limo requirements. This screening process includes a National Criminal Record Check, searches of local police databases and a thorough review of motor vehicle records as well as a vehicle inspection. Every ride on the uberX platform in Canada is backed by $5 million of contingent auto liability insurance covering bodily injury and property damage.
