UKRAINIAN CANADIAN CONGRESS URGES CANADIANS TO LIGHT A CANDLE IN MEMORY OF
1932-33 HOLODOMOR VICTIMS IN UKRAINE
WINNIPEG, Nov. 26 /CNW/ - Ukrainians around the world will mark Holodomor Remembrance Day on November 27, 2010 - the annual commemoration of the most tragic episode of Ukraine's history when Stalin's regime used famine as a weapon in an attempt to destroy the Ukrainian people in the 1932-33 Holodomor.
"We ask Canadians to honour the victims and survivors of the Holodomor by lighting a candle on Saturday (Nov 27) evening at 19:32 (7:32 p.m.) and placing it in their windows," stated Ukrainian Canadian Congress National President Paul Grod. "We must never waver in our commitment to honour the memory of the millions of victims of Stalin's campaign of terror and must ensure that the memory of these victims is recognized to ensure that the world never forgets."
The Ukrainian World Congress, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, launched an international awareness campaign called "Candle of Prayer" which is being conducted in Ukraine, Canada, and in 33 countries around the world. The campaign's slogan is translated as "Keep the candle of memory lit".
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress appeals to Ukrainians and all Canadians to join the "Candle of Prayer" commemoration this Saturday on November 27, 2010, on Holodomor Remembrance Day. The campaign's initiatives for that day include:
- a minute of silence observed from 19:32 to 19:33 (7:32 to 7:33 PM) local time as a symbolic representation of the Holodomor years, followed by prayers for memory of the millions of murdered Ukrainians; and
- candles lit in every church, community centre and on window sills at home.
Canada and 13 other countries around the globe joined Ukraine in recognizing the Holodomor as genocide; the memory of Holodomor victims has been honoured by various international institutions, including the European Parliament, United Nations, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
