Free Public DC Quick Charging a First in Canada
MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada (MMSCAN) today moved a step closer toward faster, more convenient charging of its pure electric i-MiEV hatchback with the installation of a direct-current, quick-charging station at its headquarters.
The Eaton-manufactured unit provides i-MiEV an 80 per cent charge in less than 30 minutes. Moreover, MMSCAN is offering free battery charging from the CHAdeMO*-compliant unit to electric vehicle owners in the vicinity of the greater Toronto area.
MMSCAN's quick charging station** is the first of its kind installed in Canada and available to the general public at no cost.
The DC quick charger is one of three methods of providing electricity to i-MiEV's 16 kWh, lithium-ion battery pack. Level 2 AC charging - available to home- or business-owners, is a 240V system that offers a full charge from empty in seven hours. To date, over 76 Eaton Level 2 chargers have been installed at Mitsubishi i-MiEV-certified dealers in Canada, and many more in the homes of i-MiEV owners. Level 1 charging utilizes standard 120V receptacles and requires up to 22 hours to charge from empty.
"We are committed to supporting the growth of an electric charging infrastructure, all of which paves the way for greater convenience to our i-MiEV customers," said Shin Fujioka, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada. Since going on sale last December, MMSCAN has delivered 69 i-MiEVs across Canada.
Among early adopters of i-MiEV are Hydro-Québec, government of Quebec, Transport Canada, city of Calgary, British Columbia's Saanich Police Department and Saskatchewan's SaskPower. In addition to fleet deliveries, most i-MiEV sales have been to consumers who have taken delivery throughout the winter. To date, MMSCAN has named 30 certified i-MiEV dealerships and expects that number to grow during 2012.
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a five-door, 4-passenger, subcompact hatchback with a range of up to 155 km. It is the only electric car in Canada to offer the DC quick charging port as standard equipment.
In the forefront of advanced, electric-vehicle technology, i-MiEV has already earned kudos in Canada and beyond:
• The Mitsubishi i-MiEV was named the most fuel-efficient subcompact car sold in Canada by Natural Resources Canada in 2012.
• The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is the "greenest car in the United States", a designation from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.
• The Mitsubishi i-MiEV was nominated for a World Green Car Award, one of the world's most prestigious, credible and significant programs of its kind, administered by a non-profit association.
