TORONTO/BURLINGTON, ON, Sept. 26, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor National President Jerry Dias is taking part in the Halton Women's Place 'Hope in High Heels' walk on Saturday morning. The Honorable Dr. Kellie Lietch, Minister responsible for the Status of Women, will also be in attendance.
In addition to being the Minister responsible for the Status of Women, Dr. Leitch is also the Minister of Labour, and she and Mr. Dias have a strong working relationship as a result.
"Dr. Leitch and I have significant political debate, and still I enjoy working with the Minister and respect her commitment to our community," noted Mr. Dias.
"As a constituent and colleague, I was thrilled to hear that Minister Leitch will be joining us this Saturday. We must all stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight to end violence against women, here in Canada and around the world," said Dias.
Dias will be taking part in the annual walk with his son Jordan for the fourth year. The pair have raised over $60,000 for the Halton Women's Place this year, adding to the $120,000 they have raised in the three years prior. A number of other union members will be joining Dias in the walk.
"The women in my family and the women in the labour movement have helped me understand that violence against women will only end with the involvement and leadership of men," said Dias. "I am striving to be one of those leaders."
Hope in High Heels is an event where men walk in heels to show their support in ending violence against women, and to raise awareness about the issue that still affects thousands of women and girls across the country.
Last year, the Halton Women's Place provided to 270 women and 211 children in the shelter, responded to almost 2000 crisis calls, and helped 574 women through outreach programs. And yet 766 women did not receive shelter due to capacity.
Mr. Dias will be available for media interviews before and after the event.
