Last phase of $1.5B investment to enhance reliable access to affordable natural gas supplies
CHATHAM, ON, Nov. 1, 2017 /CNW/ - Union Gas today announced the in service of a CAD $622.5 million expansion of natural gas pipeline and compression facilities that will support the reliable movement of affordable natural gas to Ontario homes and businesses and markets further east.
The facilities placed into service on time and on budget include additional compressors and related station facilities at the Dawn, Lobo and Bright Compressor Stations. Together, they will move an incremental 0.45 PJ/d (.4 Bcf/d) of natural gas supplies through the Dawn-Parkway System, which links markets in eastern Canada and the northeast U.S. with the Dawn Hub.
These facilities represent the third phase of a CAD $1.5 billion-investment in the Union Gas Dawn-Parkway System between 2015 and 2017. This three phase Dawn-Parkway System expansion will provide 1.3 PJ/d (1.2 Bcf/d) of incremental capacity for a total capacity of 8.2 PJ/d (7.5 Bcf/d), making it one of the most robust pipeline systems in North America.
"With the emergence of abundant, affordable supplies located close to Ontario in areas such as Pennsylvania and Ohio, the demand for natural gas transportation along the Dawn-Parkway System continues to increase," said Steve Baker, president of Union Gas. "Our investments, in conjunction with related infrastructure projects by Enbridge Gas Distribution and TransCanada Pipelines east of Parkway, provide eastern Canadian and U.S. northeast markets with increased access to the Dawn Hub and Appalachian supplies."
The Union Gas Dawn-Parkway System provides for the movement of natural gas from the Dawn Hub – the largest integrated natural gas storage facility in Canada located near Sarnia – to the Greater Toronto Area, where it interconnects with other pipelines serving eastern Canadian and U.S. markets. Reliability of service on the Dawn-Parkway system is enhanced by Loss of Critical Unit coverage, which provides reserve horsepower across the system.
