Union Gas Donates $25,000 to Burlington Flood Relief
Need is great: Devastating flood affected 3,000 homes in area
BURLINGTON, ON, Sept. 15, 2014 /CNW/ - Union Gas is giving $25,000 to help Burlington residents recover from a devastating flood that hit the area in August and damaged thousands of homes.
Through the Burlington Community Foundation, the full donation will go directly to victims of the flood. On Aug. 4, heavy rains caused extreme flash flooding, leaving behind millions of dollars in damage to almost 3,000 homes in the area. There is still a lot of clean up to be completed and not every homeowner had insurance that covered all damages.
Mike Shannon, Union Gas vice president of distribution operations, and Mark Egbedeyi-Emmanuel, district manager for Hamilton/Halton today presented the donation to Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring and Colleen Mulholland, president and CEO of the Burlington Community Foundation.
"The flooding affected thousands of people in a community where Union Gas employees live and work. As a community partner, we feel compelled to help our neighbours," Shannon said. "Our company believes strongly in supporting the communities we serve across Ontario through good times and difficult ones. It's part of who we are."
This is the second contribution Union Gas has made to flood relief in Burlington. Soon after the disaster, Union Gas presented Burlington Fire Chief Tony Bavota with a $2,500 cheque to provide working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors for flood-damaged homes.
For more than 100 years, Union Gas has been privileged to work in more than 400 Ontario communities. Each year, the company supports the communities where its employees live and work through thousands of volunteer hours for local charitable and non-profit organizations, major charitable giving and sponsorships.
Last year, Union Gas donated close to $3 million to community and charitable organizations in Ontario, including over $928,000 to United Way. In addition, Union Gas employees, retirees, family and friends provided over 17,000 volunteer hours to help strengthen the communities where they live and work.
