$3,500 grant to Waterloo Region Children's Safety Village
CAMBRIDGE, ON, May 31, 2014 /CNW/ - Union Gas is helping the Waterloo Region Children's Safety Village recognize exceptional local young people through a $3,500 grant awarded today.
Waterloo Region children in junior kindergarten through Grade 8 are eligible for the safety village's annual Hero Awards. The awards recognize children who assisted their classmates, parents or friends and performed at a level that is beyond expectations, while contributing to a safer community.
This year, nine children were honoured for various heroic acts such as calling 9-1-1 to assist a family involved in a motor vehicle accident, for helping strangers in need in emergency situations and for demonstrating extreme compassion and commitment in helping neighbours, classmates and family members.
Rick Bigelow, Union Gas utility service manager for Waterloo south, presented the $3,500 cheque to Lisa Hummel, coordinator of the Waterloo Region Children's Safety Village, at the sixth annual awards ceremony. Safety Village staff, city mayors, event sponsors, police and fire officials and school board representatives were present to celebrate with the award winners and their families.
"One of our core company values is safety, both on and off the job. Safety is so important to our employees that we are also very active in getting others to focus on it," said Bigelow. "We're very pleased to support this program, which recognizes our young community safety heroes."
"The Children's Safety Village is proud to host the Annual Children's Hero Awards to acknowledge the incredible efforts of the children in our community. It's important for us to acknowledge that their efforts can and do make a difference," said Hummel. "The Hero Awards allow the village to raise funds to support our regular education programs. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our sponsors. Without them, we could not reach the 22,000 students we teach each year free of charge."
