Union Gas supports fire safety program for Sundridge-Strong youth
$3,000 grant to Volunteer Fire Department for fire prevention program at local school
SUNDRIDGE, ON, April 2, 2014 /CNW/ - Union Gas is helping the Sundridge-Strong Volunteer Fire Department deliver its Fire Prevention Program to the students at Sundridge Centennial Public School through a $3,000 grant awarded today.
Kim Vester, Union Gas administrative assistant for the company's northeast district, presented the cheque to fire chief Wayne Beavis, members of the Sundridge-Strong Volunteer Fire Department board and representatives of the fire association, at the fire hall.
The Sundridge-Strong Fire Department teaches public school students about fire safety and fire escape by having each student go through a fire safety trailer. The grant will also help the fire department provide fire safety training at other public events in the Sundridge and Strong area.
"As a company, our focus on safety doesn't end with the workday. We believe in investing in programs that will help make our communities safer 24/7," said Vester. "That's why we make it a priority to support important safety programs like this one, which is helping teach our children about fire safety."
"The Sundridge-Strong Fire Department is very happy to be receiving this donation that will go towards public education," said Beavis.
In addition to natural gas delivery services for homes and businesses and contributing to the province's economy through investment, job creation, municipal taxes and energy efficiency programs, Union Gas supports education as a way to build a skilled workforce for the future, support economic development for Aboriginal communities and encourage conservation. This value is reflected each year, as the company supports communities across Ontario through thousands of volunteer hours for local charitable and non-profit organizations, major charitable giving and sponsorships. Last year, Union Gas donated close to $3 million to community and charitable organizations in Ontario, including over $928,000 to United Way. In addition, Union Gas employees, retirees, family and friends provided over 17,000 volunteer hours to help strengthen the communities where they live and work.
