LONGUEUIL, QC, July 16, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) wishes to advise road users of an upcoming road work blitz on the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. This blitz will occur during the Construction Holiday for around six days. During this time, the Jacques-Cartier Bridge will be completely repaved:
- From Sunday, July 22 at 2 AM to Tuesday, July 24 at 8 AM
- From Saturday, July 28 at 2 AM to Monday, July 30 at 8 AM
One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic during the work. Because this work requires favourable weather conditions, we encourage you to consult our blog (www.jacquescartierbridge.ca) regularly in the event that the dates may change.
Metro, Buses, Bikes, Carpooling
During this blitz, it is strongly recommend that road users plan alternate ways of accessing Montreal and the South Shore during rush hour on Monday, July 23; Tuesday, July 24, and Monday, July 30. The Metro, buses, bikes or carpooling are excellent options for avoiding the rush hour traffic on those three days when it may be at its heaviest.
The bridge's bike path will be open during the road work and remains an excellent option. The Champlain, Victoria and Honoré-Mercier Bridges and the Louis-Hyppolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel are also possible alternatives, but traffic at those locations will likely be heavy as well.
Saturday, July 21: The Great Holiday Departure
It was decided to carry out the major work blitz during the Construction Holiday, when traffic is less heavy on the road network. The work will start on Sunday, July 22 at approximately 2 AM, so that vacationers have the entire day on Saturday, July 21 to leave the city for their summer holidays.
Moreover, it will be possible to access the Jacques-Cartier Bridge for the fireworks on Saturday, July 21, as the road work will be starting afterwards. We would also like to remind motorists that over the following weekend, the fireworks will be taking place on Friday, July 27, which will enable us to work the entire weekend (July 28, 29 and 30). On the evening of Friday, July 27, the bridge will also be open to pedestrians for the fireworks.
The Entire Bridge Repaved: A Major Undertaking
Carrying out this work over a short period (around 6 days) is a great challenge. The goal is to repave the entire Jacques-Cartier Bridge this year, so that only the approaches to the bridge will need to be done next year. The Jacques-Cartier Bridge was last repaved 10 years ago, when the entire deck was replaced. Hundreds of workers will be working day and night on the bridge deck during this major work blitz, pending favourable weather conditions.
