CORNWALL, ON, Jan. 28, 2019 /CNW/ - As Cornwall City Council is poised to award a new solid waste contract on Monday night, workers from HGC Management Inc. (HGC), the current contractor, will be rallying outside City Hall. If Council awards the new contract to a different contractor, at least 25 workers, some of them long-time employees, will be out of a job on April 1st, unless City Council takes steps to ensure any new contract protects existing jobs.
Members of Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 234-B will be joined by allies as they urge Council to protect these jobs. "You have the ability to build job protection into any new contract," says Keith Sandford, CUPE National Representative. "You have the ability to show leadership here, and ensure any new contractor must take the existing workforce if they win the privilege of serving this community. We are urging you: don't be job killers in the City of Cornwall."
