UPDATED ADVISORY - Update from Steelworkers re U.S. Steel Canada Court Proceedings: Rescheduled

TORONTO, Sept. 28, 2015 /CNW/ - Due to developments late Monday, the United Steelworkers (USW) has been advised that U.S. Steel Canada court proceedings regarding benefits for retirees have been rescheduled to Thursday at the earliest, with the date still to be confirmed.

As the date of the court proceedings has changed, members are asked to prepare to attend court on Thursday, instead of Tuesday, should the date be confirmed.

The court was to hear a motion from the USW opposing U.S. Steel Canada's threat to suspend pension plan contributions and crucial health benefits for retirees.

"While the date of court proceedings has changed with little notice, our members, retirees and supporters are ready to join us on Thursday, or any day, any time, to fight for the pension contributions and health benefits they have earned and that they deserve," said Gary Howe, President of USW Local 1005 in Hamilton.

"We are working hard to ensure our members and retirees, who have worked their lives in dangerous, hazardous conditions, are not abandoned by this company. We will use this delay to organize and spread the word, so our members and retirees can witness proceedings in court on Thursday," said Bill Ferguson, President of USW Local 8782 in Nanticoke.

U.S. Steel Canada is under court-supervised insolvency protection. Its parent company, U.S. Steel, has decided to move production of high-value steel out of Hamilton and Nanticoke to its American facilities, over the objections of Canadian workers, pensioners, community leaders and the court-appointed monitor.

"We will continue to defend our members and retirees through this difficult process and do everything we can to stop U.S. Steel Canada from destroying its operations," said Rob Newstead, Unit Chair, USW Local 8782 Pickling Division.
