TORONTO, April 5, 2018 /CNW/ - Sam McKinney, Principal of Upper Canada College, announced today appointments to two new positions at the Toronto-based independent boys' school. As part of its strategic plan, leading up its 200th anniversary in 2029, the school is re-organising the leadership structure of its Preparatory (SK to Year 7) and Upper Schools (Year 8 to 12), with the creation of these two Heads of School positions, effective July 1.
Tanya Sweeney will join UCC as Head of the Preparatory School. Naheed Bardai, Head of the Middle Division for three years, will become Head of Upper School. Sweeney will be the first female Head of School in College history. Both Sweeney and Bardai bring a wealth of global experience to the school. As Heads of School, they will be responsible for leading, coaching and developing faculty and staff, and ensuring the delivery of excellence in teaching and learning, resulting in exceptional student experiences.
Sweeney has spent the past six years at the American International School in Hong Kong where she is currently finishing her term as Assistant Head of the School and Elementary School Principal. She also spent six years in Kuwait serving as Elementary School Principal of two schools. She began her educational career in Canada with teaching positions at Somerset Academy in Markham, Ont. and the Thames Valley District School Board. She holds degrees from Western University, Brock University and the University of Toronto. She also holds an Ontario Principals' Certification from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.
Prior to joining UCC, Bardai spent 10 years with The Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, Kenya, as the Principal of Senior School and Diploma Program Co-ordinator. Bardai holds degrees from Western University's Richard Ivey School of Business, the University of British Columbia, Institute of Education, University of London and Columbia University. He is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) examiner, Diploma consultant and part of the IB's Theory of Knowledge curriculum development team.
"I'm confident Tanya and Naheed will make an extraordinary impact on the College," says McKinney. "Their global perspective, dedication to delivering transformational learning experiences and passion for inspiring others to be their best selves positions us well to achieve the ambitious goals set in our Strategic Directions."
