National retailer kicks off its second annual charitable campaign today and invites Canadians to join them in keeping those in need warm this winter
VANCOUVER, Nov. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - Canadian furniture and home accent retailer, Urban Barn, invites its customers to join them in keeping those in need warmer this winter for the second year in a row with its "Blanket the Country in Warmth" campaign. Beginning today, with every $5.00 donation, a brand-new Urban Barn fleece blanket will be donated to a local shelter within the community. The initiative will run through December 8 across all 40 Urban Barn retail locations in Canada's five most westerly provinces. This year, Urban Barn hopes to surpass last year's successful campaign donation of 8,000 blankets with a new goal of donating 10,000 blankets with the support of its customers.
"We are proud to roll out 'Blanket the Country in Warmth' for a second year in a row," shares Linda Letts, president, Urban Barn. "As a result of the overwhelming community support last year, we learned that not only is the initiative reflective of whom we are as a company and as individuals, but it's also reflective of our caring customers. We love being active members within our communities, and encourage everyone to join us in supporting the cause again this year."
While Statistics Canada does not collect monthly or annual data on the number of homeless persons in Canada, the heartbreaking truth is evident in shelters across the country. Vancouver's Covenant House and Scarborough, Ontario's Second Base Youth Shelter, for example, continue to receive those in need in record numbers each winter; a pattern repeated night after night, from coast-to-coast, only possible with the assistance of committed staff and caring community partners. With some shelters offering support to women and children while others provide secure shelter exclusively for men, the overarching goal of warmth and safety for all remains the same.
