Vale's Voisey's Bay Mine Receives Prestigious National John T. Ryan Safety Award for the Safest Select Mine In Canada
MONTREAL, April 30, 2019 /CNW/ - Vale is proud to announce that last evening its Voisey's Bay Mine in Labrador was awarded the national John T. Ryan Trophy in the Select Mines category for its outstanding safety record during 2018. The award was given at the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum's (CIM) Award Gala in Montreal. This is the fifth consecutive year that Voisey's Bay has received this prestigious national award.
"I'm extremely proud of every single employee at Voisey's Bay, each of whom made a significant contribution to achieving this national honour," said Dino Otranto, Chief Operating Officer of Vale's North Atlantic Operations and Asian Refineries. "This national award, received for the fifth year in a row, demonstrates the commitment from all of our people at the Voisey's Bay mine site to genuinely care for each other by actively identifying and managing risks in our workplace that have the potential to cause harm."
The John T. Ryan Trophies are CIM Awards of Excellence given to mines in three categories: Metal Mine, Coal Mine and Select Mine, which includes open pit mining. In each category, the award is given to the mine that experiences the lowest injury frequency during the previous year in all of Canada. With the achievement of 1,089,432 hours worked during 2018, Voisey's Bay had an impressive zero lost-time injury rate.
Vale's overall safety record in Newfoundland & Labrador is excellent, with operations including the Long Harbour Processing Plant in Newfoundland, Voisey's Bay Mine in Labrador and the current Voisey's Bay Mine Expansion Project, which is transitioning the mine from open pit to underground mining. In January 2019, the Newfoundland & Labrador team marked four years without a lost-time injury, which is an injury that causes time away from work. This represents more than 20 million-person hours without a lost-time injury.
