TORONTO, June 11, 2013 /CNW/ - In Monday night's exciting season three finale of Top Chef Canada, Vancouver's Matthew Stowe (Cactus Club Cafe) was crowned with the distinguished title of Canada's Top Chef in Food Network Canada's smash hit series. In addition to the coveted title, Stowe receives the grand prize of $100,000 sponsored by SpongeTowels® paper towels, a GE Monogram kitchen worth $30,000, and a custom installation by Caesarstone Quartz Surfaces worth $25,000.
Stowe competed against Toronto's Jonathan Goodyear (Royal Canadian Yacht Club) and Montreal's Danny Smiles (Le Bremner) in the Calgary-based finale. In a final high stakes Quickfire Challenge, the chefs were tasked with creating and executing their own food truck concepts, a popular dining trend in Calgary. Goodyear was sent home, leaving the remaining two chefs to face off in one last Elimination Challenge with the help of Top Chef Canada alumni, season one winner Dale Mackay and season two winner Carl Heinrich. The final challenge took place at Calgary's Rush Restaurant in front of special guest judge and Top Chef Canada season one finalist Connie DeSousa (CHARCUT Roast House) along with special guest tasters, recording artist and proud Calgarian Jann Arden and Lance Hurtubise, owner of Rush Restaurant.
"Winning Top Chef Canada is a huge achievement and it's an honour to share the title of Canada's Top Chef with such an elite group," says Stowe, Top Chef Canada season three winner. "Participating in this competition really challenged me to think outside the box and present the most unique, well-balanced dishes I could create while staying true to my own personal style."
Stowe currently serves as product development chef at Cactus Club Cafe, with a focus on continuous menu development for Cactus' aggressive nationwide growth plan. Upon graduation from New York's Culinary Institute of America, Stowe honed his craft at famed French restaurant, Lutèce. He went on to serve as Executive Chef at Sonora Resort in Richmond, British Columbia, where he played an integral role in the restaurant achieving the coveted Relais & Châteaux designation in 2009. During that same year, he also penned his first cookbook, The Tastes of Sonora Resort.
Matthew Stowe will be available for media interviews in Vancouver on Tuesday June 11th.
