Vancouver's Union Gospel Mission braces for cold weather; creates special
emergency kits
VANCOUVER, Nov. 19 /CNW/ - Vancouver's Union Gospel Mission (UGM) is bracing for what could be the coldest winter in decades by adding shelter staff, opening extra areas of the Mission for shelter space, and distributing special emergency kits to those who refuse offers to come inside. UGM's shelter is already over normal capacity, but will use hallways or classrooms before turning people away. Shelter and meal guests will receive a new pair of socks daily, with UGM expecting to give away 15,000 pairs of socks throughout the winter. UGM will also give out emergency survival kits to those refusing offers to come inside which will include a sturdy waterproof thermal blanket, flashlight, and other survival gear.
