WINDSOR, ON, Aug. 27, 2013 /CNW/ - On July 31, 2013, the search of a trunk of a vehicle uncovered over 400 cartons of illegal cigarettes. The cigarettes were destined to be sold in the Windsor area. The RCMP Windsor Detachment has charged Isam JASSIM, 33-years old, of Windsor under the Excise Act, 2001.
The accused in the matter is scheduled to appear in Chatham Provincial Court on October 29th, 2013.
"The RCMP is resolved to rooting out threats to our communities and the prosecution of those who commit criminal activities," acknowledged Inspector Serge Côté, Officer in Charge of the Windsor Detachment. "Contraband tobacco is a catalyst for a long list of associated crimes perpetrated by organized crime groups that adversely impact the social fabric of our neighborhoods, families and children."
Windsor RCMP is reminding the public that in addition to selling illegal tobacco products, possession of illegal tobacco products is also an offence under the Excise Act 2001 and can result in criminal charges and the seizure of vehicles and other assets.
If you have information about the sale and distribution of illegal tobacco products or any other criminal activity you are asked to contact your local police department, the nearest RCMP detachment at 1-800-387-0020, or you can anonymously supply the information to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
