AJAX, ON, May 12, 2016 /CNW/ - Spring has arrived, marking the beginning of outdoor projects for many Veridian customers. If spring landscaping or decorating plans include planting a tree, building a deck or fence, or simply digging with a shovel, customers are reminded to contact Ontario One Call to arrange a free underground cable locate to ensure any digging is clear from underground services.
"Contacting Ontario One Call before you dig is not just good practice, it's also the law," explains Terry Britton, Veridian's Manager of Distribution Services. "Damaging underground services can result in serious injury or death, a ruptured gas line could explode, a cut water line could cause flooding, and severed communication lines mean the loss of essential services. The homeowner or contractor could be liable for expensive restoration costs and potential legal actions."
Homeowners and contractors can request a free locate online by going to on1call.com or calling 1-800-400-2255. Ontario One Call requires a minimum of five (5) business days notice to allow infrastructure owners enough time to complete their response.
Ontario One Call was formed in 1996 to establish a call centre that receives excavation locate requests and notifies registered owners of underground facilities within the vicinity of the proposed excavation.
