Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) Welcomes Federal Investments in Home Care and Support Services Français
OTTAWA, March 24, 2017 /CNW/ - The Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) is voicing its support for the proposed $6 billion investment over 10 years for home care as outlined in the 2017 federal budget.
"We are very pleased to see the confirmation of home care funding to be delivered under the health accord," said Jo-Anne Poirier, president and chief executive officer, VON. "For many Canadians, receiving care at home and in their communities is a preferred option. The government's focus on improved access to home, community and palliative care – and the important focus on supporting informal caregivers – will make a critical difference in the lives of many."
VON applauds the federal government's new Canada Caregiver Credit, which provides up to $6,883 for eligible caregivers. These tax credits are critically important to the home care system, as we rely extensively on caregivers who are friends and family to help ensure people are receiving a full range of supports in the comfort of their own home.
Budget 2017 also includes an immediate down payment on investments in home care and mental health through a new legislated transfer, providing 2017–18 funding to the provinces and territories that have accepted the federal offer under the Health Accord. "This is critical funding to ensure Canadians have access to home care and other support services they need," said Poirier.
