BAIE-JAMES (JAMES BAY), QC, June 18, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - This summer, bring your friends and family for a free tour of Québec's most impressive hydropower facilities in Baie-James. It's sure to fascinate both the young and the young-at-heart!
Mighty capacity: 7,722 MW
Located in northern Québec, Baie-James offers visitors the opportunity to uncover the secrets of the largest generating site in North America—140 metres underground! Our top-notch tour guides will take you into the heart of the machinery that supplies Québec with its 7,722-MW capacity. You'll get a real charge out of the 53-storey-high Robert-Bourassa dam and the spillway known as the giant's staircase.
Discover the sheer scale of the Robert-Bourassa facility and La Grande-1 generating station
The water contained in Robert-Bourassa reservoir corresponds to approximately 10,000 litres of water for every person in the world. As for La Grande-1, it's the last of the facilities in the La Grande complex to turbine the waters of the Grande Rivière before it empties into Baie James (James Bay). You'll be amazed by how fast the rotors of each of La Grande‑1's 12 generating units spin—204 km per hour.
Different kind of getaway
Aside from the Hydro-Québec facilities and Robert A. Boyd park, you'll enjoy the splendours of Baie-James' northern landscapes in the heart of the taiga. Fishing, hunting, hiking or watching the northern lights are some of the many activities that will delight you. Come to Radisson, north of the 53rd parallel, and see for yourself.
