TORONTO, May 1, 2014 /CNW/ - 2014 marks the 50th year that VOICE for Hearing Impaired Children (VOICE) has been supporting Canadian families of children with hearing loss so they might learn to hear listen and speak. Started as a small parent advocacy group in Toronto, VOICE has grown into a national organization advocating for thousands of children with hearing loss. VOICE provides families with parent support, public education programs, advocacy for the rights of children with hearing loss and auditory verbal therapy so that the kids can learn to hear listen and speak.
On May 3rd, 2014 VOICE will be holding its 22nd annual parent conference in Toronto for the first time at the Harbour Castle Westin Hotel in Toronto followed by a cocktail reception to celebrate the 50 years of the organization.
This year's conference entitled Building on the Past for the Future is focused on social emotional development in hearing impaired children. Conference will draw parents of children with hearing loss as well as practitioners: speech and auditory verbal therapists and teachers of the deaf. The keynote speaker is Dale Atkins, a highly respected psychologist and author who is a regular the Today Show. Workshops led by dynamic speakers cover a variety of topics including current research in the field, innovative programs, bullying and conducting a successful job search for young adults. A full day Teen Leadership Workshop is also offered for teens 12 - 17 years old.
Following the conference, there will be a reception to celebrate the 50 years of VOICE. During the reception, past chairs of the Board of VOICE will be honored for their service to the organization.
The guests will be treated to a performance by Paul Langlois, guitarist from The Tragically Hip, who has been affected recently by his sudden hearing loss, and has just released his second solo album, Not Guilty.
Media are welcome to attend.
