Voting now open for CAA Worst Roads in Ontario

Annual campaign highlights needed roadway investments across Ontario

TORONTO, April 10, 2017 /CNW/ - It's that time of year again! Voting is now open for the annual CAA Worst Roads campaign. Ontarians across the province are invited to vote for the roads most in need of attention in their city or town.

CAA South Central Ontario recently conducted a member survey on the perception of local road conditions. 69 per cent of respondents indicated that there is a road in their local community or on their commute that requires repair and 71 per cent of these members indicated that they have never taken action to seek the repair of a road.

"From congestion, potholes and the timing of traffic lights to pedestrian and cycling safety, everyone is affected by the quality of our roadways," said Raymond Chan, government relations, CAA South Central Ontario (SCO). "Our annual CAA Worst Roads campaign provides an opportunity for all Ontarians to have an impact in their community by nominating roadways that they feel need to be prioritized for change. This is an opportunity to have your voice heard."

The CAA Worst Roads campaign is a platform for Ontarians to make roads safer by helping municipal and provincial governments understand what roadway improvements are important to citizens and where they need to be made. Roadways can be nominated for reasons such as potholes, deteriorating pavement, poor or non-existent cycling or walking infrastructure or poor road signs.

The top voted CAA Worst Roads from 2016 were found in Prince Edward County, Timmins, Thunder Bay, St. Catharines, Hamilton, Sudbury and Toronto.

Votes for CAA's Worst Roads can be cast at caaworstroads.com until May 1st. Once voting is closed, CAA will compile a list of the Top 10 Worst Roads in Ontario and the worst roads in regions across the province. The regional top five lists will help shine a light on the state of local roads in municipalities across Ontario. CAA will present the list of 2017 Worst Roads to local and provincial officials to help inform future funding and planning decisions.

Participants will be entered weekly into prize draws, concluding with a grand prize draw to win free gas for a year.
