Walk Away From Homophobia to Support Lisa Reimer
VANCOUVER, May 26 /CNW/ - Lisa Reimer is the lesbian teacher who alleges was relieved of her teaching duties from Little Flower Academy (Independent School) in April because of her sexual orientation and family status. Lisa is returning to public school teaching as a music teacher in September. This walk is intended to be a show of solidarity and support for her family. See details below.
What: "Walk Away From Homophobia" Where: Meeting Point to begin the walk - Corner of King Edward and Granville St. (south west side), this is one block from Little Flower Academy When: Thursday, May 27th at 4 P.M. Going to: Emily Carr Elementary Why: Lesbian teacher was relieved of her duties as music teacher after her partner had a baby. Music: The Glass Youth Choir to perform
This gathering of students, teachers and others concerned about homophobia (especially in our schools) is meant to be a positive response to the events at Little Flower Academy (a Catholic independent school ) a few weeks ago. As you most likely know, a lesbian music teacher was told to stay home for the remainder of her contract.
It is hoped that this will not be a protest. But rather show of solidarity by concerned citizens. We will be walking away from LFA and walking toward a public school nearby. A choir will be joining us as a symbolic gesture since the homophobia at LFA resulted in ending their own music program abruptly. As well, a few student leaders will be invited to say some words.
