Walmart Canada Releases Easter Shopping Survey
MISSISSAUGA, ON, March 28, 2013 /CNW/ - Walmart Canada today unveiled the results of a nationwide Easter shopping survey* conducted for the retailer by Research Management Group. The survey probed buying trends and shopping preferences across Canada for the period leading up to the Easter long weekend.
"To help Canadians save this Easter, we have been working hard to offer our customers excellent value on the grocery items we traditionally find on our kitchen tables at this time of the year," said Michele Hardinge, senior vice president of Merchandising, Fresh Food at Walmart Canada.
Survey Highlights
- More than 95 per cent of Canadian shoppers planned to make purchases for Easter
- Survey shows Canadians consider Walmart Canada the retailer that will save them the most at Easter
- Survey shows average consumer plans on spending $174 this year for Easter, which is on par with Valentine's Day spending
- As of Friday March 22, 86 per cent had not completed their Easter shop
- Groceries are the most purchased category and represent 31 per cent of the average Canadian Easter shopping basket
"Easter is about getting together as a family, which is why we see a high percentage of shoppers that plan on purchasing groceries and gifts," said Andy MacDonald, Partner at Research Management Group. "When it comes to gifts, the items most purchased are candy and chocolate."

Conducted by Research Management Group for Walmart Canada, the online survey of 796 shoppers has a margin of error is 3.5 per cent. Respondents were recruited from the AskingCanadians national panel to quotas representing primary household shoppers by region, gender and age to reflect the national profile. Note that like the primary household shopper profile the sample is 70 per cent female and 30 per cent male. Fieldwork timing was from February 25 and March 22, 2013.
