QUEBEC, Feb. 10, 2014 /CNW/ - The War Amps begins its 2014 key tag mailing to Quebec residents this month with the theme "Then and Now."
The enclosed letter is written by Alex, a multiple amputee member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. Many television viewers will remember Alex from a War Amps public service message, where, at age 4, he was shown playing baseball and golf with the help of his artificial leg. Today, at 17, his passion for sports remains, including playing hockey with specially designed gloves.
In the letter, Alex explains how he will never forget meeting an older multiple amputee, Simon, at a CHAMP seminar. "It was the first time I ever saw someone like me. Seeing him handle daily tasks reassured my family that I too would be able to do things on my own. I've now realized my dream of being a Junior Counsellor like Simon, with the kids looking to me as a role model," he writes.
Then and now, Alex embraces The War Amps philosophy that, with perseverance, you can overcome the challenges of amputation and succeed in life. "The artificial limbs I receive enable me to swim, run and do whatever I want to do. In future, I will complete my road to independence with a career in communications. I am so very grateful to all of you who help The War Amps to provide its programs and continue this long legacy of 'amputees helping amputees.'"
War Amps key tags protect any keys, not just car keys, and are more vital than ever with the extremely high replacement cost of electronic door openers and anti-theft devices. Each key tag has a confidentially coded number. Should the keys be lost, the finder need only call the toll-free number on the back of the tag, or deposit them in any mailbox, and the keys will be returned to the owner by bonded courier.
The War Amps receives no government grants. Its programs are possible solely through public support of the Key Tag and Address Label Service. For more information, or to order key tags, call toll-free 1 800 250-3030 or visit waramps.ca.
