TORONTO, May 2, 2016 /CNW/ - Kinark Child and Family Services is celebrating Children's Mental Health Week (CMHW) from May 1-7, by hosting a green ribbon themed photo contest and also by reminding people to wear a green ribbon to help increase awareness of the signs of child and youth mental health issues. CMHW is also celebrated to help decrease the stigma and to increase the understanding that help is available and treatment works.
Approximately one in five children/youth in Ontario have a mental health disorder ranging from anxiety, and other mood disorders to more severe psychiatric disorders. If these issues are left untreated, they can lead to severe consequences for the child or youth.
By raising the awareness through Children's Mental Health Week, we can decrease the stigma associated with mental health issues, see the signs sooner and get children the treatment or help they need to live productive and positive lives.
To participate in Children's Mental Health Week, Kinark, in partnership with TELUS, is hosting a photo contest. Simply submit a photo with a green ribbon theme on Facebook or Twitter and use the hashtag: #KinarkCMHW16. Enter as often as you like and all photos will be entered into a draw for an LG G4 cellular phone, supplied by TELUS. The contest closes at midnight on May 7, 2016.
Kinark staff will be in various schools in the regions we serve, to talk about child and youth mental health and provide information about the services Kinark offers children, youth and families. For more information, please visit www.kinark.on.ca.
