Western Financial Group's charitable arm continues legacy of contributions for local communities
HIGH RIVER, AB, May 5, 2020 /CNW/ - Once again Western Financial Group's Charitable Arm, the Western Communities Foundation is celebrating a successful year of support and contributions to communities across Canada.

Overview of Contributions to Local Communities in 2019
- $131,176 was put towards education-based initiatives such as the Western Inspirational awards, school playground updates and construction and breakfast/lunch programs
- $92,553 was donated to community resources such as food banks, library's, search and rescue teams, community halls etc.
- $60,038 was invested into community sports and rec
- $49,250 went to Healthcare initiatives such as equipment purchases and healthcare research
- $11,029 went towards animal initiatives such as SPCA in BC, AB and SK
"It is always so wonderful to reflect on the year and to see all the stories that come out of our many contributions to the areas where Western is located," says Western Communities Foundation Managing Director, Laurette LaPlante. "Every year we are blown away by the generosity of donations to the Foundation, and 2019 was no exception."
"We all look forward to building on our hard work each year," she says. "We want to be able to give back to our communities as much as possible."
Now, spanning across Canada, through Western, the Western Communities Foundation has given back to more communities than ever before. Employees raise funds and help to decide where the money will go back to in their communities in the areas of public health, public housing, education, and recreation.
"Our people raise the bar every year and we just keep getting better," LaPlante says. "It's our people who make it all possible."
Western Financial Group President & CEO Kenny Nicholls echo's LaPlante on how invested employees are to giving back to their communities.
"Each and every year I am so pleased to look back on all of the wonderful accomplishments our employees were able to achieve as a result of our Western Communities Foundation programs," says Nicholls. "It gives us all such a collective sense of pride that we truly are making a difference where we live and work.
Most recently, reacting to the food crisis as a result of COVID-19, the Western Communities Foundation started the Community Food & Nutrition Emergency Fund Program which is providing $75,000 to help registered organizations supply 225,000 meals for our communities.
Western Communities Foundation
Founded in 2002, the Western Communities Foundation serves to give back to the communities where Western employees live and work, and foster employee pride and engagement. The Foundation's core donation programs include community Infrastructure Grants, the Western Inspirational Awards for graduating high school students, and the Matching Grants Program. Since its inception, the Western Communities Foundation has raised more than $3.6 million to support local communities.
