SOCHI, Russia, March 10, 2014 /CNW/ - Brian McKeever's gold medal won with the teamwork of his two guides, Erik Carleton and Graham Nishikawa, highlighted Sunday competition for Team Canada at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games, along with a win by the wheelchair curling team.
What Canada Did on Monday at the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympic Games:
PARA-NORDIC SKIING
Brian McKeever (Canmore, Alta.) and his guides Erik Carleton (Canmore, Alta.) and Graham Nishikawa (Whitehorse, Yukon) won Canada's first gold medal of the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in the men's 20-kilometre visually impaired classic ski race. The 11-time Paralympic medallist captured his eighth Paralympic victory with a time of 52:37.1. Brittany Hudak (Prince Albert, Sask.) was 10th in the women's 15-kilometre classic-ski standing race. Ottawa's Margarita Gourbounova, and Regina-based guide, Andrea Bundon, were fourth in the women's 15-kilometre visually impaired category. The biathlon middle distance races take centre stage at the Laura Nordic Stadium on Tuesday.
PARA-ALPINE SKIING
Alexandra Starker (Calgary, Alta.) was the top-placing Canadian, finishing seventh in the women's standing division with a time of one minute, 36.52 seconds. Alana Ramsay (Calgary, Alta.) placed 10th in 1:43.39 , also in the women's standing division. Erin Latimer (Etobicoke, Ont.) did not finish her run in the women's standing category. Next up is men's and women's super combined on Tuesday, which will feature one super-G run and one slalom run.
SLEDGE HOCKEY
Canada's sledge team did not have a game today. They face the Czech Republic on Tuesday at 20:00.
WHEELCHAIR CURLING
Canada defeated the U.S. with a score of 7-2 in the morning game and lost to Norway 6-8 in an extra end in the afternoon match. This drops Canada's record to 4-1 and ties them with Russia for first place. Tomorrow Canada takes on China (3-2) at 15:30.
PARA-SNOWBOARD
The para-snowboard team continues to train and prepare for their race day, which is Friday, March 14.
