OTTAWA, May 27, 2013 /CNW/ - The third annual Great Places in Canada competition kicks off on May 27 when Canadians from coast to coast to coast begin to nominate and vote for their favourite locations.
Last year, over 200,000 people voted for their favourite street, neighbourhood or public space.
"As Canadians, we're proud of the many beautiful places in this country," says CIP President, Andrea Gabor. "People everywhere get really involved in this contest and want to see their favourite location honoured as a Great Place."
The winning locations from the past two competitions are:
2011 | 2012 | |
Canada's Great Street | Commercial Street, Nanaimo, BC | Queen Street, Fredericton, NB |
Canada's Great Neighbourhood | Le Petit Champlain, Québec, QC | Osborne Village, Winnipeg MB |
Canada's Great Public Space | The Forks, Winnipeg, MB | Cape Forchu Lighthouse, Yarmouth, NS |
Nominations will be accepted online at www.GreatPlacesInCanada.com from May 27 until September 2, 2013. The voting period ends September 23, 2013, and the winners will be announced on World Town Planning Day, November 8.
Canada's Great Places are selected on the basis of both popularity and planning excellence as judged by a panel of experts. In addition to the grand winners, there are three People's Choice Awards based solely on the number of votes.
The contest is proudly sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Planners.
