With an Unplanned Pregnancy and Unexpected Romance, shomi Celebrates Mothers' Day with the Canadian Premiere of Hit U.K. Comedy, Catastrophe, Streaming May 10
"Comedy is bloody hard to do: which is why, when something as wonderfully funny as Catastrophe appears, it feels so very, very exciting." – The Independent
TORONTO, April 23, 2015 /CNW/ - Clumsy lust, instant pregnancy, and genuine disaster. Are these the hallmarks of modern love, or the makings of an epic catastrophe? The shomi™ answer, of course, is yes and yes. Critically-acclaimed and already renewed for a second season, shomi presents the Exclusive Canadian Premiere of the hit British comedy, Catastrophe. Awkward, charming, and cringe-inducing in the best possible way, all six episodes of the comedy roll out on shomi on Mothers' Day, Sunday, May 10. What? You were expecting breakfast in bed and more finger-paint art for the fridge? This is a much better – and funnier – tribute to the trials and tribulations of impending motherhood. Trust us. Catastrophe is only available in Canada on shomi (now that's a real disaster… for those other streaming services!)
Rob Delaney (Coma, Period) and Sharon Horgan (Pulling) write and star in Catastrophe, a six-part comedy following an Irish woman and an American man who make a bloody mess as they struggle to fall in love in London. But of course they've gone about it completely backwards. The Irish school teacher Sharon meets American advertising executive Rob at a bar and they engage in a sweaty fling for a week. When Sharon finds herself pregnant, Rob returns to London, and together they try to navigate their new – and complicated – relationship.
From hormone swings and diamond rings, to first dates and due dates, Sharon and Rob are on the express route to partnership and parenthood. And everyone has an opinion about their "catastrophic" situation, from Sharon's frenemy Fran (Ashley Jensen, Ugly Betty) and her long-suffering husband Chris (Mark Bonnar, Line of Duty); to Rob's Mom (Carrie Fisher, Postcards From the Edge) weighing in on all his escape options from across the pond. Once a mother, always a mother…
An Avalon Television production, Catastrophe was commissioned by Phil Clarke, Head of Comedy at Channel 4. The series was directed by Ben Taylor (Cardinal Burns, Cuckoo) and produced by Jack Bayles (The Mimic, VIP), while the Executive Producers are Sharon Horgan, Rob Delaney, and Richard Allen-Turner, Kara Baker and Jon Thoday. Catastrophe was co-produced by Birdbath Productions and Merman Films.
