Who are Canada's Wealthiest Accountants?

TORONTO, June 7, 2017 /CNW/ - Canadian Accountant, Canada's independent news website for the accounting profession, has published its first annual survey of the Top 10 Wealthiest Chartered Professional Accountants in Canada. Topping the list is Peter Gilgan, the founder, CEO & Chairman of Mattamy Group Corp., whose net worth is valued at $2.71 billion.

Many of Canada's business leaders are professionally trained accountants who built business empires on the foundation of their financial skills. "Our Top 10 list shatters the myth of accountants as financial technocrats who are cautious and risk-averse," said Colin Ellis, editor-in-chief of Canadian Accountant.

"Canada's wealthiest CPAs include globally recognized executives like Sergio Marchionne of Fiat Chrysler and brand names in business like Eric Sprott, Jim Balsillie and Ian Telfer. I'm sure many people will be surprised that these business leaders are professional accountants."

The top four accountants on the list are each worth more than a billion dollars, making them some of the richest Canadians and wealthiest people worldwide. The list includes three executives who built business empires in mining, two in real estate, and one in the retail sector. All ten are male, reinforcing the reality of the glass ceiling in Canadian business, but the list is ethnically diverse, a positive sign of Canada's multicultural mosaic.
