WIND Mobile to significantly expand network performance & service offerings
Terms of Rogers-Mobilicity deal delivers substantial new wireless spectrum to WIND Mobile, solidifying its position as fourth national carrier
TORONTO, June 24, 2015 /CNW/ - WIND Mobile today announced plans to significantly enhance the performance of its wireless network and the services it offers to mobile phone users in Canada, following Industry Canada's approval of the purchase of Mobilicity by Rogers Communications Inc.
Under the terms of the deal, WIND Mobile will receive new spectrum previously held by Mobilicity and Shaw Communications, which will at least double WIND's network capacity in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern & Eastern Ontario.
"This new spectrum acquisition means WIND Mobile now has a 20 megahertz AWS-1 corridor from Victoria to Ottawa," said WIND Mobile CEO Alek Krstajic. "This will significantly improve our network performance from Ontario to the Pacific, enabling us to deploy new technology and accelerate the development of our LTE network and other services."
Krstajic says today's developments further enhance WIND Mobile's position as Canada's fourth national wireless service provider.
"The federal government has consistently demonstrated its commitment to fair competition and the development of a strong alternative to the big three incumbent players, and the measures they have brought to bear around the Rogers-Mobilicity deal further strengthen our ability to give Canadians true mobile freedom," Krstajic said. "This simply would not have been possible without the efforts of Industry Minister James Moore and the federal government.
"This is a significant step forward on that journey, but that journey must continue in order for Canadians to truly benefit from the better prices and service offerings which fair competition delivers."
This latest acquisition follows WIND Mobile's win of another substantial block of 30 MHz of AWS-3 spectrum in the Industry Canada auction held in March.
Krstajic also expressed thanks to Rogers Communications Inc. for its co-operation in the course of the discussions, and in particular CEO Guy Laurence and CFO Anthony Staffieri.
