Wind-powered energy project in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville: THE PUBLIC
ASSEMBLIES CANCELLED FOR SECURITY REASONS
KAHNAWÀ:KE, QC, Oct. 27 /CNW Telbec/ - It is with great regret that the promoter of the wind-powered energy project in Saint-Cyprien de Napierville, Kahnawà:ke Sustainable Energies (KSE), a company under the ownership of the Kahnawà:ke Economic Development Commission, has decided to cancel the public assemblies, to be held today, October 27, at the Napierville Golf Club. "We would have preferred to meet the residents and present our project in a fully transparent way, but, we have heard that certain people, who may not even be from Saint Cyprien-de-Napierville, have decided to be present only to provoke others, and even engage in racist acts, furthering the potential for violence. For security reasons, and to act in a socially responsible manner, we have decided to cancel the assemblies. Nonetheless, we wish to reiterate our willingness to be transparent and as such, remain committed to responding to requests for information from the community," declared Bud Morris, KSE President and CEO of the Kahnawà:ke Economic Development Commission.
The Mayor of Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, André Tremblay, warned KSE of the risks of the assemblies getting out-of-hand and asked that they not be held. He refused to get involved in trying to lower the tension level or to speak out against the potentially violent individuals. This gave KSE no choice. "We cannot hold these assemblies and put those present at risk," stated Bud Morris.
Complaint against the Journal de Montréal
Also, following the publication of articles tainted with sensationalism that contain misleading and discriminatory information, KSE and the Kahnawà:ke Economic Development Commission have decided to file a complaint with the Conseil de presse du Québec. "The Journal de Montréal refused to meet with us or to retract its errors, so we thought it necessary to begin the steps to denounce the discriminatory bias put forth. The Kahnawà:ke Economic Development Commission has tried to act in full transparency and honesty, with the goal of creating a sustainable development project that benefits the region. We think that journalists who are reporting on the project should use professionalism, rather than sensationalism, to ensure that the facts of the project are reported to the public," concluded M. Morris.
Kahnawà:ke Sustainables Energies confirms that it will endeavour to answer all requests for information from the population, to keep them informed if changes occur, and to promote respect, tolerance and sustainable development.
