WINDSOR, ON, Aug. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - On August 1st, 2013 members of the Windsor RCMP concluded an investigation into the sale and distribution of contraband tobacco products in the Windsor area. As a result, a Windsor resident has been arrested and is currently facing charges under the Excise Act 2001.
On August 1st, 2013, Windsor RCMP investigators simultaneously executed two search warrants at a convenience store on Hall Avenue and a residence on Moy Avenue in Windsor. Seized from the residence and convenience store were 256 cartons of illegal cigarettes and approximately $2,200.00 in cash.
Hasanain AL-KHALIDI, 26 years old, of Windsor, faces charges of unlawful possession and sale of unstamped tobacco products, and one count of proceeds of crime, contrary to the Excise Act 2001. He is scheduled to appear in court in Windsor on Monday, September 9th, 2013.
"The sale of contraband tobacco is not a victim-less crime. The profits from this illegal activity often benefit criminal organizations who use these profits to fund other illicit activities which affect the safety and security of our communities", stated Inspector Serge Cote, Officer in Charge of the Windsor Detachment. "The RCMP remains committed to disrupting and interdicting those persons involved in the illicit sale and distribution of contraband tobacco."
