MONTREAL, Dec. 12, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Some exhibitions you won't want to miss at the Galerie de l'UQAM in the coming months: an exploration of the world of books and fairy tales, with Carol Wainio; an ode to freedom, inspired by the streets of Hochelaga, with Isabelle Guimond; reflections on democracy and citizenship, with Esther Shalev-Gerz; an exploration of the notion of identity, with the duo Jean-Sébastien Vague; and the launch of the virtual exhibition Le Projet Peinture/The Painting Project.
January 10 to February 22, 2014
Opening: Thursday January 9 at 5:30 pm
- Carol Wainio. The Book
Curator: Diana Nemiroff
Exhibition and tour organized by Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottawa
Curated by Diana Nemiroff, this exhibition brings together eight years of work and comprises an extended reflection on the subject of storytelling, the art of the copyist, and the social transformation in contemporary society engendered by industrialization. Illustrated books, which seek to educate their readers through images and ideas about the world, are the focal point for her reflections. The artist is especially fascinated by the narrative power of the fairy-tale, which often features animals in the role of helper to a human protagonist.
- Isabelle Guimond. Rêve, Baby, Rêve!
Graduating Master's student in Visual and Media Arts, UQAM
Isabelle Guimond constructs her relationship to the world through her pictorial thought. From what she calls micro-contexts, she develops large canvases where carefully painted images are silhouetted against gradients of brilliant colour bordering on the garish and trashy. For the exhibition Rêve, Baby, Rêve! [Dream, Baby, Dream!], she takes her imagery from the streets of Hochelaga, focusing particularly on what has managed to survive, what has been left behind, limited circumstances.
March 7 to April 12, 2014
Opening: Thursday, March 6 at 5:30 pm
- Esther Shalev-Gerz
Curators: Annette Hurtig et Charo Neville
Produced by the Kamloops Art Gallery, Kamloops
This exhibition brings together key works by Esther Shalev-Gerz in her first solo show in Canada. Born in Lithuania, raised in Israel and a resident of Paris since 1984, Esther Shalev-Gerz is internationally recognized for her investigations into the nature of democracy, citizenship, cultural memory and spatial politics. Her work persistently challenges traditional notions and practices of portraiture; it considers the portrait's possibilities within contemporary discourses and the politics of representation. The works in this exhibition are emblematic of her practice and offer ways to approach our relationship to these questions.
- Jean-Sébastien Vague. Bonjour Hi!
Graduating Master's students in Visual and Media Arts, UQAM
Jean-Sébastien Vague is the name that the duo Jade Barrette and Sophie Rondeau have adopted for their performance practice. Since 2008, this duo has experimented with notions of identity through their performance strategies, which draw on lived experience in order to question the relationships between individualism and conformity. The exhibition Bonjour Hi! will present a process-based work that uses social codes related to notions of self-image in order to challenge the identity models put forth by popular culture and dominant values.
From April 25 to May 10, 2014
Opening: Thursday, April 24 at 5:30 p.m.
- Passage à découvert 2014
Graduating undergraduate students in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM
Passage à découvert is an opportunity to discover the works of tomorrow's contemporary artists and teachers who will take their place in museums, galleries and schools. The exhibition illustrates the students' creative vitality, curiosity and freedom and bears witness, once again, to the professionalism of recent graduates and the excitement that their projects provoke. Presented each year, this exhibition also reveals the wealth and diversity of the programs offered by the École des arts visuels et médiatiques, which favours multidisciplinary education.
