MONTREAL, Dec. 17, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Exhibitions coming to the UQAM Centre de design this winter: the dynamism of modern Italian graphic design in the work of Bruno Munari; revisiting the iconic Swiss cuckoo clock; and upcoming talents in Printemps en design.

One thing leads to another
February 5 – April 12, 2015
Vernissage: Wednesday, February 4, at 6 pm
Curator: Alessandro Colizzi, Professor at the UQAM School of Design
Artexte Curator: Sarah Watson
Bruno Munari. One thing leads to another, presented simultaneously at the UQAM Centre de Design and Artexte, approaches the work of Bruno Munari (1907-1998) from different angles.
Using examples from Munari's graphic output, the Centre de Design exhibition explores the emergence and nature of Italian modernism in the first half of the twentieth century. As an artist and designer working in Milan in the late 1920s, Munari epitomizes the encounter between the local modernist tradition (Futurists) and the European mainstream associated with Constructivism and the New Typography.
At Artexte, the focus is on Munari's artist's books and other projects created after 1950, including children's workshops, short experimental films and pioneering explorations with photocopying.
To mark the importance of this event, other activities are planned in conjunction with the exhibition, including creative workshops for children and educators, and a study day with international guests.
In collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal.
24 hours in the life of a Swiss cuckoo clock
February 19 – March 1, 2015
Vernissage: Wednesday, February 18, at 6 pm
All-Nighter: February 28, 2015, from 8 pm to 3 am
Travelling exhibition produced by HEAD – Geneva and presented in conjunction with the MONTREAL EN LUMIÈRE FESTIVAL
Is the cuckoo clock, that emblem of Swiss precision and skill, merely fodder for folklore and tourism? Originally, the cuckoo clock evoked the simplicity of an idealised rural life in an Alpine setting, insulated from the vicissitudes of progress. But today, in a world governed by efficiency and the laws of the market, in a society where design is on an equal footing with art, what remains of the Swiss cuckoo clock?
Under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Greff, designer Claudio Colucci asked students at HEAD – Geneva University of Art and Design, to reinterpret the cuckoo clock. There emerged 24 updated cuckoo clocks, created by young designers in the Masters in Design program at HEAD, directed by Alexandra Midal, as well as by international designers invited by the school, including matali crasset, Nitzan Cohen, James Auger, Camille Scherrer and Marco Borraccino.
In collaboration with the Consulate General of Switzerland in Montreal and with the support of swissnex Boston.
